Motivating and preparing middle and high school students for success in STEM careers through an innovative, challenging academic experience at UTRGV since 1986.
TexPREP's mission is to provide an innovative, academic program designed to motivate and prepare middle and high school students for success in advanced studies leading to careers in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
To serve as a primary resource of early, motivating, and innovative STEM learning experiences to broaden the participation of all students with the collaboration of partner school districts, institutions of higher education, industry, and the community at large.
We are living in exciting times where science and technology are advancing by leaps and bounds. Our mission at TexPREP is to motivate and prepare students from an early age to see STEM, and especially engineering, as a career where they can feel fulfilled and contribute to a better world for all.
TexPREP at UTRGV is part of the statewide TexPREP System that was born at UTSA in the 1970s and has expanded to several campuses across Texas. The program has been running at UTRGV (formerly UTPA) since 1986, making it one of the longest-running and largest summer STEM programs for youth at the university.
We currently run programs on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses to better serve the Rio Grande Valley community. Students experience a real university environment, engage with STEM faculty, and are mentored by current engineering majors.
The program is accredited by the Texas Education Agency (TEA), and students earn one CTE elective high school credit for every year they successfully complete PREP Levels 2 through 4.
We are deeply thankful to the school districts that sponsor their students, our industrial sponsors, parents, UTRGV, and the College of Engineering and Computer Science for partnering with us in this effort.
A rigorous, TEA-accredited curriculum taught by professors and high school teachers that progressively builds skills from logic and algebra to programming, CAD, and research.
Weekly engineering design projects where students work in teams to apply classroom concepts, develop critical thinking, and learn real research methodology.
Students are guided by carefully selected mentors β former TexPREP alumni and current UTRGV engineering majors β who attend classes and lead study sessions.
Students are immersed in the university environment through year-round contact with faculty, professionals, and STEM career awareness presentations.
Collaborative project groups foster communication, collaboration, teamwork, and leadership skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
Successfully complete PREP 2, 3, or 4 and earn one innovative CTE state elective high school credit per year β recognized by Texas school districts.
TexPREP is a four-level progressive program. Students advance each year, building on prior knowledge and earning TEA credit at Levels 2β4.
